The Erindale Cardinals were finally able to get onto a baseball and play a game last night after a series of rainouts as they hosted the Mississauga SW Twins at the frigid confines of the 9th Line Sports Complex. This was the first game of the year for both teams as they had both been affected by poor field conditions all year.
The Twins took command of this game early as they put up single runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings and then added a pair of runs in the 3rd inning before adding on single runs in the 4th and 5th innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead. The Cards were able to cut into the lead a bit as they go their first run of the game in the 5th inning and then added a pair of runs in the 6th to cut the deficit in half at 6-3. Mississauga was able to add one more run late off of an Erindale reliever as they were able to take this game by a score of 7-3.
It was a light night offensively for the Redbirds as they only managed three hits on the night. Chris Novia led the way as he went 1-for-4 with his first home run of the year and a pair of RBIs. Aaron Palmer was 1-for-3 with a walk while Adrian Butrimas was 1-for-4 with a stolen base. Jay Woodford and Ricardo Marin plated the other two runs for Erindale.
On the hill, the Cards showcased their new arms this season as a trio of rookies saw some time there this game. Sebastian Santos (0-1) started and took the loss. He went two innings allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits. He walked three batters while striking out three as well.
Zach Bayfield threw the next three innings allowing a pair of earned runs on four hits. He walked three as well and struck out one. Evan Harrison toed the mound for the next three innings and allowed an unearned run on one hit while striking out three. Veteran hurler Kevin Lucas threw a clean 9th inning walking one and striking out two batters. Tomas Rincon started and collected the win for Mississauga SW.
With the loss, Erindale now sits at 0-1 on the young season while Mississauga SW imporves to 1-0. Next up for the Cards will be a trip to the Flower City to take on the Brampton Royals on Thursday night. Game time is slated for 7:15pm at Dave Dash Memorial FIeld and bif lefty Andrew Mullin is the probable starter on the bump.
