The Cards finally got into the win column in league play as they defeated the Burlington Brants by a score of 14-6 last night at Erindale Cardinal Field. Erindale opened the scoring as they put up a run off Brants starter Trevor Woodjetts in the bottom of the 1st inning. Burlington answered right back in the top of the 2nd inning with a run to tie the game up 1-1 but Erindale broke the game wide open with a 7-run bottom half to lead 8-1 after two innings.
The Brants cut the lead to 8-2 with a run in the 5th inning but Erindale answered back again with three runs in the home half to extend the lead to 11-2. Burlington added a pair of runs in the 6th but Erindale got one back in the bottom half to make the score 12-4. The teams would trade 2-run innings in the eighth leading to the 14-6 final score.
Jay Woodford led the Cardinals offensive attack going 3-for-6 with a home run, triple, three runs and four RBIs. Chris Novia was 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk, two runs and three RBIs while Adrian Butrimas was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run. Aaron Palmer was 1-for-4 with a home run.
Rookie Evan Harrison got the nod on the mound and went six innings in collecting the win. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked three batters while striking out eight. Newcomer Zach Bayfield tossed the last three innings. He allowed two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out four Brants batters.
With the win, Erindale now improves to 1-5 on the season and sit in 4th place in the Andrews Division. Up next will be the Cards first trip to Oakville Park and a date with the Oakville A's. Game time is slated for 7:30pm and Brendan Fox will draw the starting aassignment on the hill.
