COBA Major Week X Recap feat Burlington Brants

The Burlington Brants have been on quite a tear as of late and kept on up play this week as they rattled off a pair of wins in COBA Major Baseball League action. They were suppose to play three games this week but had their game against the Erindale Cardinals on Tuesday washed out by rain. 

 

On Wednesday, the Brants hosted the Etobicoke Rangers at Nelson Park. Burlington opened the scoring in this one as the plated a run in the second inning for an early 1-0 lead. They would add another pair of run in the 3rd inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Rangers would battle back though as they scored single runs in both the 4th and 5th frames to cut the lead to 3-2.

 

The Brants would get one of those back in the home half of the 5th inning though to extend their lead back to two at 4-2. Etobicoke got a late rallying going though as they pushed across three runs in the 7th inning to take the lead 5-4. Burlington was able to put together a rally of their own scoring three runs in the 8th inning and held off a late Etobicoke push to with this game 7-5. 

 

Tim Sogan was the big stick for Burlington this game as he went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs and two RBIs. Michael Westlake was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs, an RBI and a stolen base while Max Von Gemmingen was also 2-for-5 with a double a run and two RBIs. 

 

Kyle Arbuthnott, Corrie Morrison and Darryl Pierce each had a hit for the Brants as well with Pierce scoring a run and Morrison collecting an RBI. Josiah Devapalan led the way for Etobicoke at the dish going 1-for-3 with a double, an HBP, a run and three RBIs. 

 

Joel Connors drew the start for the Brants on the hill and went six innings allow four runs (all earned) on five hits. He walked four, hit on batter and struck out 10 as he grabbed a no decision in this game. Franco Pace follwed him to the mound and collected the win going two innings allowing one run (earned) on three hits. He walked two and struck out three.

 

Luke Connors, brother of Joel, came in to shut this game down in the 9th inning for Burlington allowing no runs on no hits. He walked one batter, hit one batter, and struck out two to collect the save. Ian Zwartz, the 3rd of three Etobicoke hurlers, took the loss tossing one inning and allowing three runs (all earned) on three hits. He walked one and struck out two.

 

On Friday, the Brants made the trek to Oakville Park and a date with the Oakville A's that night. The A's would open the scoring in this one as they got a run in the bottom of the 1st frame for an early 1-0 lead. The Brants would answer back though as they scored two runs in the 3rd inning and add another five runs in the 4th inning for a 7-1 lead. 

 

Oakville would get one back in the home half of the 4th inning to cut the lead to 7-2 but Burlington would add a pair of runs in the 6th inning to extend their lead to 9-2. Oakville, not going away, would put up four in the home half of the 6th inning to cut the lead to 9-6. 

 

The Brants, as they had done all game, would answer back again this time only plating a run to take a 10-6 lead after eight innings. Oakville would mount a bit of a rally in the bottom of the last inning getting a run but couldn't get any closer as Burlington would take this game by a score of 10-7. 

 

Corrie Morrison and Luke Connor both led the way for the Brants going 2-for-5 each with a pair of RBIs. Michael Westlake was also 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs and an RBI while Mike Grilli was 2-for-3 with a double and a run. Max Von Gemmingen was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI while Brock Marshall was 1-for-4 with a pair of runs. Darryl Pierce was 1-for-1 with a run and Tim Sogan rounded out the Burlington oense with a run. Steve Shum had a pair of home runs for Oakville. 

 

On the mound, the Brants went by committee on this evening with seven arms seeing some time on the bump. Cam Ryerson started the game for Burlington and tossed three innings allowing one run (earned) on two hits while striking out two Oakville batters. Trevor Woodjetts ended up with the win throwing two innings allowing one run (earned) on one hit while also striking out two. Jacob Schuurman took the loss for Oakville.
