The first game of a sketchy weather, day-baseball doubleheader went all the Sox' way, as they defeated the Erindale Cardinals 12-2 at Milton Community Park in Saturday's early game to jump over the .500 mark on the season.
Bolstered by an 8-run 3rd inning, Chris Bloom broke the game open with a 2-run single, followed by Liam Buckley's two-run double, and capped by Liam Butchereit's RBI single. The Sox actually trailed 2-0 before opening up on the scoreboard.
Dylan Clark started on the hill for the Sox. The veteran hurler surrendered 5 hits, 2 runs over two innings, striking out one. Nick Edwards earned the win in relief, pitching a scoreless 3 inning, while veteran Rhys Tapper came on to pitch the 4th & 5th innings, both scoreless to cap off the early victory.
The Sox tallied 10 hits for the shortened 5-inning affair. Chris Smorenburg, Liam Buckley, Liam Butchereit, and Luke Crowley each collected two hits in the game. Chris Bloom, Buckley, and Crowley paced the team with 2 RBI apiece. The early season patience continued at the plate in game one, as the Sox drew 6 walks, while the defence pitched a shutout in that column, committing zero eerrors for the first time this season.
Erindale shortstop, Pip Murray-Smith was perfect at the plate for the Cardinals, going 3 for 3 from the leadoff spot.
