Sox Slip Back to .500, Lose to Brants in Annual Campbellville Day Game
6/7/2025by Pete Ham

Sox win, Sox lose. Sox win, Sox lose... back to even ground again.

Three days after the best performance of the season to date, and lifting their 2025 record to 4-3; the Milton Senior Red Sox fell flat Saturday, losing the return match with Burlington 8-4 in their annual Campbellville Day Game in the village. For the second consecutive year, the Brants came to compete and left with the W.

Burlington opened the scoring in the 1st inning after Brants' veteran outfielder Mike Westlake popped a 2-run, opposite field home run off Sox starter Chris Cloes, clearing the berm and giving the visitors an early 2-0 lead. From there, Burlington starting pitcher Joel Connors dominated the Milton lineup, not allowing a hit until the 6th inning. Trailing 7-0, shortstop Adrian Cookson broke up the no-no with a clean single up the middle. Leadoff hitter, Chris Bloom then hopped on a fastball, poking a single into right field, creating a spark for the offence. After first baseman Liam Buckley grounded out to move the runners up 90 feet, cleanup hitter Aaron Nash stepped up and crushed a no-doubter into the cemetery beyond the left field fence. That's as close as the Sox would get, as Connors settled back into his rhythm, and reliever Jordan Rienzo capped off the game for Burlington, pitching the final two frames.

Aside from Nash's home run, it was Cookson - making his first start at short stop this season, who had a nice day at the plate going 2 for 3. Bloom was on base 3 times, and swiped two more bases - giving the Sox 4 steals on the day.

Sox starter Chris Cloes went 5 innings, allowing 7 hits, 5 runs (all earned), striking out 5, and walking 2.

The Sox' record now stands at 4-4 on the season, and will take the field next on Friday, traveling back to Oakville to take on the A's at Oakville Park. Game time is 7:30 pm.

Of special note: The Red Sox will play twice this coming week - the aformentioned game in Oakville on Friday evening, and then return home Saturday to face the A's again in the Diamond Dedication Day Game where our own Glenn Turner will have his name enshrined to the re-naming of the field in his honour. Events at Milton Community Park all day Saturday, with the cermony for Glenn slated for 1:30 pm, and the game to follow at 2:00 pm.
