The Oakville A's came into the COBA Major League Playoff Tournament as the lowest seed but put together a great run of baseball as they won the 2025 playoff crown this past weekend at the 9th Line Sports Complex in Mississauga. It is the teams first playoff title since they last turned the trick in 2019 winning that year as well in Milton.
Based on the A's regular season seeding, they had to play in the 6 vs 7 play-in game on Friday night and here they matched up against the Erindale Cardinals. This game was a bit of a slugfest as the A's came out on top by a score of 9 - 6. Lefty Peter Zytner collected the win on the mound for Oakville tossing six innings allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out four. Andrew Mullin took the loss for the Cardinals going 5 1/3 innings allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits while walking two batters and striking out one. At the plate, Oakville was led by Adam Doyle who was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs. Arthur Kowara was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs and Wade Sage was 2-for-2 with a run scored and a pair of RBI. Aaron Palmer led the way for Erindale going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and a pair of RBIs
With the win, the A's (1 - 0) advanced into the main playoff tournament and had two pool play games on Saturday. In their morning game, they took on the Milton Red Sox and it was all Red Sox in this one as they won by a score of 13 - 3. Travis Winteler ended up taking the loss for Oakville as he went 1 1/3 innings allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits while walking one ansd striking out none. Nathan Hamel took the win for Milton with a complete game throwing five inning allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits while walking one batter and striking out five. Offensively, Oakville was led by Ryan Freemantle who was 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Maiya Takao was 1-for-1 and had the other RBI for the A's. Owen Dobosh (2 R, 2 RBI) and Jacob Siracusa (2 R, 3 RBI) each had three hits to pace the Milton offense.
In their afternoon tilt, the A's needed a win to advance against the Burlington Brants (0 - 1). They were able to get the job done with a narrow 11 - 10 victory in this game. Steve Shum, the 2nd of three Oakville hurlers, took the win in this game tossing three innings allowing five runs (one earned) on seven hits. Luke Connors took the loss for the Brants tossing four innings allowing seven runs (all earned) on 10 hits while walking two batters and striking out six. At the plate, Ryan Freemantle (R, 3 RBIs) and Victor Christensen (R) each had three hits to lead the way for Oakville. Adam Doyle was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs. Max Von Gemmingen led the way for the Brants going 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Joel Connors was 2-for-5 with four RBIs.
After splitting their games Saturday, the A's (2 - 1) advanced to the semi-finals where they had a date with the Brampton Royals. In a very tight affair, Oakville escaped with a 9 - 8 vicotry in this game. Travis Winteler, the 3rd of three pitchers for the A's would grab the win in this game as he threw 1 2/3 innings allowing three runs (all earned) on three hits while walking one batter and striking out two. Kyle Mucin, the 2nd of three Brampton hurlers, would take the loss in this one going 1 1/3 innings allowing five runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out none. Offensively, the A's were led by Adam Doyle (R, RBI) and Steve Shum (R, 2 RBI) who both had three hits a piece. Veteran Mark Walton was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI while Arthur Kowara was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Veteran OF Andrew Thomson was 2-for-3 with a HR, three runs and three RBIs to lead the Brampton offense.
So, with the win, Oakville (3 - 1) advanced the to the playoff championship game and a re-match against the Milton Red Sox (3 - 0) who defeated the Waterloo Tigers (1 - 2) by a score of 17 - 5. In this game. the A's were an out away from the mercy rule but a rugged Milton club kept chipping away and in the end Oakville won this game by a score of 16 - 12. Cam Cook, who came in in relief for starter Alex Hawley, grabbed the win in this game as he went 2 1/3 innings allowing one run (earned) on five hits while walking none and striking out one. Nagthan Hamel took the loss for Milton going two innings allowing eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out none. Offensively, the A's were led by Steve Shum who was 4-for-5 with a HR, four runs scored and two RBIs. Nick Jaeggin (HR, R, 4 RBI) and Arthur Kowara (HR, 2 R, 3 RBIs) both had three hits as well for Oakville. Liam Butchereit led the way for Milton atthe dish going 4-for-5 with a triple, a double, three runs scored and three RBIs.
A big congratulations to the whole Oakville A's club but especially manager Alex Hawley who played his final game in an Oakville uniform in this game as he will be starting some new adventures coming up next season. Huge shout out to Dave Clark, Marvin King, Gerry Reyes, Glenn Turner and El Mooro himself George Moore and the Milton Red Sox on a great run through the playoffs as well.
