As a famous comedian once uttered; "Went to a baseball game, and football game broke out!" There were runs aplenty on Friday evening as the Milton Red Sox clashed with the Oakville A's at beautiful Oakville Park.
The Red Sox jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after some control issues plagued the Oakville starting pitcher. Jake Siracusa walked to score a run, Medrik Dube singled scoring two, Matt Fusco walked plating another, and Luke Crowley also earned a free pass to stake the Sox to an early 6-0 lead,
Milton increased its' lead to 8-0 in the 2nd inning after another Fusco walk produced a run, and Kyle Leger grounded out to count another.
The Sox scored 5 more times on 3 hits in the top of the 4th inning to increase the lead to 13-0. Fusco's RBI single, and Christian D'Cruz' 2 RBI double were the big blows after loading the bases once again with free passes.
Oakville woke their bats in their half of the 4th, scoring six times (all unearned) to cut the lead virtually in half. Milton would respond immediately in the 5th with another 5-spot on 4 hits, courtesy of RBI singles from Brendam Mahoney, D'Cruz, Liam Butchereit, and an RBI sacrifice fly from Daniel Leonard to bolster the Red Sox lead to 18-6.
The A's would continue to swing the bats, almost matching Milton's 5th inning output with 4 runs in the home half of the 5th to shrink the lead to 18-10. That would be as close as the home side would get, as the 3-hour time limit would put a pin in this 7-inning slog.
Nathan Hamel earned the win for the Sox. The righthanded hurler gave up 10 hits, 10 runs (4 ER) in his tough 5 innings of work. He would strike out 1 and walk 4. Nick Edwards and Jake Siracusa - who made his season debut - would round out the pitching for Milton on the night. SIracusa looked sharp, throwing strikes and definitely gave the Sox' bullpen a shot in the arm for down the long, summer road.
Milton would amass 13 hits for the game. D'Cruz, Mahoney, Crowley, Dube, and Leger led the team with two hits apiece. The Sox would walk a dizzy-ing amount on the evening - earning a whopping 22 free passes, with Siracusa, and Leonard both getting 4 each. The Red Sox would also swipe 4 bases.
Defensivly, Milton turned one double play.
With the win, The Red Sox crept back over the .500 mark once again for the season and sit at 8-7.
Next: Milton concludes its' regular season series with the Erindale Cardinals on Monday night at 9th Line Sports Park. Game time is 7:30 pm.
